We heard this place had good food, and I was excited to try it out. When I walked in, I was stunned by the "attic-basement-garage" explosion that is the decor. I practically had an anxiety attack upon entering. It literally feels like you are eating in your great-aunt's old attic. It is frightening. But I tried to relax. My dinner companions were excited to try to raved-about food, so I decided to go to the restroom, wash my hands, and calm down. Big mistake. While I walked to the restroom, I realized the whole place is like being in an episode of Hoarders. Again, frightening. When is the last time this place was cleaned? There are dusty plates stacked up to the ceiling. There are old, creepy posters everywhere. And there are personal-looking photos all around the restaurant. Seriously. If I had a child, I would not want photos of him or her all around this place. As a last resort, I was hoping for a glass of white wine to calm my nerves... but no. No wine. Really, guys? If you are going to have a restaurant as creepy as this, at LEAST offer your patrons alcohol! We didn't even stay to try to food. Went next door to Tarpon Tavern. Maybe the food is great. However, I had no interest to stick around a try it. Did I mention the violation of child labor laws? Our poor nine-year old waiter...

sorry but second visit and will not be back. Only ones in place on Wednesday night and service was absurdly slow- Owners daughter served us- dropped things off and disappeared. Owner /chef served the entrees- just not very good- Crawfish Etoufee was soupy with no flavor- pasta in seafood dish cooked to mush- How can a trained chef -with only two customers in the place- overcook pasta

So, how do I describe Zante's? Imagine if your Aunt Liza, you know the one whose house looks like the love child of a thrift/junk shop on steroids and an episode of Hoarders? So she and her Mad Chef Louisiana native husband, Brad, who churns out a Holy Grail of Fine N'Awlins cuisine in his tiny culinary laboratory in the back of their home, decide to open this Cajun/Creole restaurant in their big living room on a cool little main street in a town that's most renown for it's Greek culture and restaurants. Somewhere along the way they have a young son, who at 9 yrs old looks straight out of central casting as the most perfect acting, capable, polite, well spoken, self-effacing kid who nonchalantly provides the glue to hold this sitcom of an eatery together (and I mean all of that in the best possible way). In other words.....it's perfect. ;-) No, I'm serious. Zante's couldn't pull this off if it tried it any other way. I've rarely found a restaurant that captures the soul and passions of a family so well, that no matter what good or bad happens, I'm smiling. If you're a diner, someone who needs the attention, comforts, and experience provided by designer decor with hovering waitstaff to serve your every whim, don't bother coming to Zante's. On the other hand, if you're an eater, who cares more what lands on your plate and palate, has plenty of time for your meal, who loves to go to a restaurant just to see what happens (good or bad), and go with the flow, and as long as the food is great you'll still enjoy it, then Zante's is for you. I arrived about 7pm and there was only one couple seated in the entire dining room. After a bit of a wait, the young son, George, appears and seats me with my menu by the front windows. After waiting about 10 minutes for someone to return, I head to the back of the restaurant to see if someone will take my order, and found George doing his homework. How can you be upset when George has his priorities straight?! ;-) One could only wish their kids are so well-disciplined. George pops up and promptly comes to my table to take my order, which he does perfectly, of course, even rattling off the string of available drinks better than most waitstaff I ever get elsewhere. I ordered the Creole Jambalaya, which is served baked in rice with spicy tomato sauce. George served up my salad along with an amazing light roll/bun smothered in garlic butter served so hot I had eat it with a knife and fork. Wow, delicious. Since the jambalaya takes a bit of time to bake, I had a chance to soak up the decor. It's impossible to describe, but let's just say it lets you know the owners' fun personalities...which included a good bit of spirited yelling back and forth between themselves, while the ever-steady George whistled while he seated guests. Eventually Liza appeared and took command of the dining room with a friendly mix of conversation and diligent customer attention. The jambalaya arrived on mix-matched plates, in two steaming mounds of rice with chicken, andouille & smoked sausage, tasso (Cajun ham), shrimp, crawfish, and mussels, all baked together with onions, celery, bell pepper and tomato. It was delicious, with the freshness of the ingredients, spices and herbs coming clearly through the flavors. The jambalaya could easily serve two people, so I took half home. A few more things. I've found Tarpon Springs to be full of so many friendly people. At lunch when no seats were available, I was invited to join a table and had a great conversation about the local cuisine. Tonight at Zante's, I sat near two other tables and all 3 tables had good conversation together over the two hours. While we were likely as different as any strangers could be, soon we were like old neighbors showing up for breakfast at the local diner to chew the fat. Zante's is located in the heart of downtown Tarpon Springs, which consists of a number of blocks of cool small stores, restaurants and coffee shops. It's a great place to wander around if you've got the time. Atmosphere: 4 Service: 4 Food: 5 Value: 4 Two tips: 1. While I didn't see gumbo on the menu, apparently you can get it instead of a salad served with your entree. I would have ordered it had I known about it, but hey, it gives me the perfect reason to go back again. 2. Most entrees are available on a heat index of 1-10. I love spicy food, but still ordered mine 4 so I could savor the flavors and not the heat. 4 was mild, in my opinion, but they'll give you spice/sauce to add to taste.

The atmosphere is something else. The food very good. No Booz or beer. Bring your own. Don't particularly like to have children waiting on me. TRY the SALMON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Get past the quirky interior and crazy kids and enjoy the great dishes Brad sends out from that tiny kitchen. I've never had a bad meal here, and honestly each time I say to myself... how does he do that.

This place has some of the best food in Tampa Bay! Once you get past the eccentric decor, you will absolutely love the place. I recommend lunch as opposed to dinner. Highly recommend!

Maybe it's just me. Everyone says this place is fantastic. I couldn't get over the fact that it looks like someone's crazy hoarder aunt's attic, basement, AND garage exploded all over this restaurant. Everything looked and felt dirty. There were spider webs and dust up on the higher bits of clutter and the bathroom ... well, I was very confused if I was using a private or public (re:restaurant) bathroom. It really creeped me out. The owner's 9 year old (he could be older but he's so little I wasn't sure) son was our waiter and he was cute in an "oppie" way. My salad wasn't as good as I had hoped it would be but the chicken was excellent.

The restaurant caught on fire recently. It is permanently closed. What a lost! It was my favorite restaurant in Tarpon Spring. Godspeed.

Fire damaged and closed. We have been a few times and enjoyed the bizarre decor and atmosphere and the food was pretty good. It is a fun oddity to take out of town guests to for certain. We were sad to see it was involved in a fire and closed.

  • Vicki B.

Now closed. Wonder why???? Maybe it had to do with the lack of cleanliness in the dining area....after all, if the dining room's filthy, how clean can the kitchen be???

Love this place, but it's not for everyone... We went here for lunch on a weekday and had lots of fun. There's always something to look at. Some might find it clutter, but it reminds me of grandma's house. Random nic-nacs from floor to ceiling.

There is no place like this at all. Family owned and they all work, even the youngest brought out a couple of our salads. It looks like they decide to open a restaurant in there house with stuff saved from years of collecting. There are only a handful of tables keeping it small and personal and you have to bring your own alcohol, there is a corking fee. I got the ribs which were ok the fish with crab meat I was told was good but grease. The bruschetta was delicious. Everything is fresh and if they run out then they run out. Overall good food and eclectic decor go for the food and enjoy the wild nic nacs.

First off, a warning to those care about restaurant aesthetics just as much as the quality of the food in the restaurant - this place probably isn't for you. For one, it looks like a thrift store inside. Not a junky thrift store, there are some really interesting stuff along the walls. Once you get over the unusual interior and take a look at the menu and you totally forget about the surroundings. Sea.food.Lov.ers.Par.a.dise. Seriously: crawfish, crab, salmon, shrimp, grouper(a local speciality). I went with several other people and of course had a taste of theirs and everything was delicious. I had the crawfish gumbo. SO good. They rate most dishes on 1-10 on how spicy you want everything. I would say it leans a bit hotter than expected so go down one level you would normally get. I like spicy food(got a 7) and to me it felt like an 8/9. Also, it's locally owned/operated and the whole family works there - I thought that was an added bonus as I always like local restaurants especially when they serve great food.

What can I say, I just loved this place! Went in for a quick light lunch but after reading the menu we just had to relax and enjoy the gourmet offerings and bizarre surroundings. This is not a quick food stop. It is truly an epicurean delight. Chef Brad was on his own so he was the entire wait staff, the entertainment, the gourmet chief, and the dishwasher. He was superb at everything except for the dish washing role. Definitely needed assistance there. Make reservations for dinner as there only a few tables in the entire place. Also come with your choice of alcohol as it is not served there. There is a corkage charge but will definitely save you $$ after glass or two. Go when you have the time and appetite to truly enjoy the experience. As this is a really unique experience.

It was like eating at Miss Havasham's house. The restaurant is in a junk shop which is dirty and cluttered. I saw a power strip with 5 lamps plugged into it and the light on our table flickered all evening. I kept waiting for the place to burst into flames. The salad dressing was awful, the salad from a bag, my steak was inedible, the veggies were from a can, and the coffee was cold. There was no credit card swipe, the owner has to go table to table with his phone. A horrible night, I won't be going back.

Where do I start? After reading rave reviews, I expected a bit more. The decor is interesting in a "dust collecting yard sale items/hoarding" kind of way. There's an eclectic assortment but it feels crowded & dirty. The food... I ordered the Lamb & it wasn't bad. The frozen veggies with it were a let down w the most expensive meal offered. Service was slow. The owners children were waiting tables. By children, I mean our server was maybe 12. Friendly & sweet kids but a bit taken back.

I love this place so much. The food is amazing. I lived in Louisiana and this place truly is it. This is a family restaurant dad is do the cooking, mom waitress and hostess the kids are right in there too. The son George maybe young but he is one of the best watiers I have seen. It take awhile to get your food but everything is fresh not microwaved warmed up. There is a lot of stuff to look at and play with while waiting. You can even ask for the scavenger hunt list and go on a hunt while waiting.

Creative, innovative, different, unique and a well prepared meal. That says it all about this weird clutter filled Tarpon Springs downtown Cajun/Greek eatery. Atmosphere 70 Very different if you like it. I didn't. Service 70 Nice, but amateur night. Food 90 What we had was very good. Value 80 The food was right but the rest you can keep. This eatery is defined by the excellent (our limited one meal sample) food choices and preparation. If eating and taste are your main interests, it is worth the visit. If you are looking for a total pleasing experience you might want to reconsider.

I love this place! I wish I could shout it from a mountain but all I have is this. Chef Brad is the man.

Yes it looks like grandmas attic exploded, but thats ok, it makes it the more interesting, and the food is fansatic and the service from the familly members is great and you must try the Bananas Forester, its to die for. FYI, bring your own bottle as they do not serve alcohol.

Wow, what a challenge, to describe this restaurant. I think I won't try, and just give you some advice. Go there. It's a little bit of an adventure, but (with two exceptions, below) I can't think of anyone I wouldn't take there. Don't go there if it's your first trip to Tarpon Springs, for that there are any number of fun and good Greek restaurants. This is a regular for us for a leisurely lunch. Not that there's anything wrong with going for dinner. I'll just say that you will find the experience interesting and the dining quite good. I second the suggestion that you go for lunch, although I have gone for both lunch and dinner. Don't expect the service to be fast, but unless you're only willing to have meat and potatoes or McDonald's , you'll find something you like and have a fun experience that you'll remember.

A returning Forever Fan I live in Southern California we have an abundance of culture and unique places to eat and yet I have not found anything that comes close to the flair and experience that Zante Café of Tarpon Springs, FL has to offer. I once again made a trip to not only visit family in New Port Richey, but I once again made sure that I got my fill of Chef Brad's labor of love; his unique cooking and flavors that my palate craves. Coming into Zante Café is like climbing into your favorite Aunt's attic and setting up for a tea party, minus the "dirty, filthy, disgusting", as one reviewer has shared. I ran my fingers over tables and objects searching for the rain of dust and I failed to find it; kindly note that my recent visit was Friday May 17, 2013 for lunch. This trip was extra special for me, I got to bring my fiancé who had only ever heard of Zante through my wonderful dining pleasures, his response to the whole visit was that there is no way to understand it, you have to experience it. At this visit, we had Chef Brad's version of bruschetta, once again the amazing garlic roll, I had the open top garlic chicken sandwich, my fiancé dived into the steak sandwich, my Dad had the ahi tuna and my Mom was literally almost mobbed for her chicken spanakopita with a Cajun sauce served with rice and veggies, yes folks that is for sure what I am ordering next time. We finished our visit with banana fosters. I have dined at corporate restaurants and there was dust and dirty forks , eating in my own home there is dust, and I am a person that gets weird about bent prongs on a fork, coming in Zante Café is a pleasure and a highlight of my Florida visits, I have never felt that it was filthy or disgusting - oh and I saw them scrubbing the pots and dishes when I excitedly made my way to the kitchen to ask where they got the signed Aerosmith photo from, being that I love Aerosmith. Come into Zante Café and let Brad make you lunch or even dinner, order a glass of ice tea and then get up and look at all the unique collectors' items, from Aerosmith, to Led Zeppelin, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Dr. Who, Smurfs, Harry Potter, The Beetles, a cat tea pot, Halloween, Christmas and so much more. If there is not something at Zante that does do not remind you of something awesome in your life that makes you smile then you have not lived! So stop reading this and GO! GO to experience Zante Cafe and please stay for the food. Thank you and Make Moments Matter.

I am not from around the Tarpon Springs area. I am from Maryland and I plan on moving down here. I had the seafood fra diablo level six spice. The mussels were cleaned very well, the shrimp was plump and juicy, the crayfish tails were moist. I like things with enough kick to make a light sweat, next time, I am going to try a level 7 or 8. GREAT FLAVOR! You may never find a restaurant as uniquely decorated as this one. This vibe is very friendly and you feel at home. It is a little cluttered, but you can look around and just have a great time reminiscing with others about the random items you will see. The service was pretty good that night. I have told it has been better, so I will go back and see. I would definitely recommend this restaurant. I will definitely be a returning costumer.

The atmosphere/decor is VERY eclectic. It is like eating very good food in an unsorted and unorganized antique/consignment shop.... to the wrong person it is very overwhelming. The bruscetta is great, as are the green teas and the chef's buns. The crab cakes are nice and meaty, but a bit fishy.
